Leicestershire County Council have spent £6000 fitting satellite navigation devices to 14 of their Lawn Mowers because gardeners claimed they kept getting lost in long grass. The council said the satellite navigation technology will help combat an 'unprecedented amount of growth' on its verges and playing fields. 

Susie Squire of the TaxPayers' Alliance said: 'At a time when ordinary people are struggling to put food on the table, frittering away public money on this sort of nonsense shows just how out of touch this council have become. 

Leicestershire resident Brian Rayner, vice-president of the national society of allotment and leisure gardeners, said: 'It's bonkers, it beggars belief. Why spend all this money on these gadgets when you can see the grass grow with your own eyes? 

'All it takes is for someone to look out of the window and they can see if grass needs cutting, you don't need a satnav to tell you that.
